Celestial realms and a fascination with the universe also played an important part in his detailed work.

Galaxies near and far find their way from paintbrush to canvas.  His insistence on correctness in his work led to the studying of astronomy to make sure that heavenly bodies were placed in the right positions on the canvas.

The Artist

Tony Melendez was an “outsider” artist born and raised in New York City.  An outsider artist is one who has no formal art training and is self-taught.

Painting for over forty years, most of the artist's canvases depict spirit guides and beings showing the way in a truly chaotic world.  The ethereal figures were meant to help and convey that tolerance and understanding are not just things people talk about, but what can truly be reached in the soul.

His travels led him to many places influencing his works, Nuremberg, Buenos Aires, Los Angeles, Miami and Indianapolis.  Indianapolis eventually became his home.

His experiences while in these cities, gave way to an expression of his artwork that he eventually called his “Dream Scapes” and “Dream Tapestries”.  The ultimate influence in his works was the Italian Renaissance and the Middle Ages.  These dream terms came from the fact that the artist would incorporate his dreams into the works and set them in Medieval locations with historically accurate costumes and surroundings.
